If life was like a box
of chocolates,
Then I’d like to believe
childhood was the sweetest one.
Perfectly moulded to a shape,
sometimes it’s square,
sometimes a circle.
Filled with the silky
strawberry cream of
happiness and memories,
relationships and opportunities,
growth and learning.
Drizzled over with
white chocolate
of tears and misery,
failure and loss,
childish tantrums and giggles,
coated with shredded coconut
of discreetly stealing
one extra cookie,
Or maybe almond shavings
of the sour taste of
half-ripe mangoes that
were eaten during vacations
at Grandma’s.
Or maybe—nothing.
With all of the ingredients,
makes the chocolate
of childhood.
You can’t help but
savour for as long as you can.
But, alas, it must end,
and you must go to the
other chocolate,
for if life is a box
of chocolates,
it’s too irresistible to stop.
